Survey Flags (ˈsɜːveɪ flæɡz) also known as Flags (flæɡz) are a core idea at the root of all knowledge and Advanced Knowledge for the Vexillians.

. The system HAS TO force Hippies to behave in ways that are increasingly remote from the natural pattern of human behavior. For example, the system needs scientists, mathematicians and engineers. It can’t function without them. So heavy pressure is put on children to excel in these fields. It isn’t natural for an adolescent human being to spend the bulk of his time sitting at a desk absorbed in study. A normal adolescent wants to spend his time in active contact with the real world. Among primitive Hippies' the things that children are trained to do tend to be in reasonable harmony with natural human impulses. Among the Baby Boomers, for example, boys were trained in active outdoor pursuits, drinking out of garden hoses—just the sort of thing that boys like. But in our Alchemy Burn children are pushed into studying technical subjects, which most do grudgingly.

Casting: Spreading FLAGS into an area where their movements can be observed.  Proper casting involves placing the flags far enough apart that they cannot all be seen at once, while recruiting Signifiers to keep them in motion.

Crystal, the: A geometric structure formed by FLAG casting.  The Crystal represents an act of self manifestation, as it is both created by and directs the position of all FLAGS within the casting.  It exists in all dimensions including time, precipitation, and color.  Producing a rotation in one facet of the crystal causes effects throughout the entire structure.

FLAG: Short for “Survey FLAG.”  A rectangular flag on a pole designed to be easily moved.  Typically yellow and unadorned.

FLAG Psychosis: A mental trance state in which Signifiers channel the will of the Crystal by meditating on the FLAGS.

“Glorious”: The “Signifier’s salute”, an expression of recognition when meeting another Signifier.

Koans: Memetic devices used to induce FLAG Madness.

Signifier: One who carry a FLAG, or has intention to carry a FLAG.  A signifier  is channeling the will of the Crystal, either consciously or unconsciously.

Vexillomancer: A practitioner of Vexillomancy. One who makes and casts FLAGS, and recruits Signifiers.  A Vexillomancer is in continuous dialog with the FLAGS during the casting, reading their positions and directing their movements accordingly.

Vexillomancy: The practice of magic involving FLAGS, both by casting them to to produce an effect and reading their positions to divine hidden knowledge.
